The Education, Democracy, and Justice (EDJ) B.A. at UC Santa Cruz offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the history and politics of education and public schooling, the formation of just and democratic societies, and the transformative role of education in addressing issues of equity and diversity. Students explore theories of cognition, learning, identity, knowledge production, and pedagogy, with a specific focus on U.S. educational contexts, including the impact of immigration and globalization. The curriculum emphasizes social justice, critical analysis of inequitable structures, and the application of transformative teaching and learning principles. Students are also encouraged to participate in field experiences and may double major or apply elective credits from related fields. Graduates are prepared for diverse pathways in education, policy, community organizations, advocacy, and further study.
