Brown University's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a rigorous one-year, on-campus, graduate program designed to develop effective secondary teachers (grades 7-12) in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. The program combines academic coursework, immersive teaching experiences, and personalized coaching within a reflective, equity-centered pedagogical framework. Students begin with a six-week summer term, teaching in Brown Summer High School, followed by a yearlong residency in local schools, transitioning from observation to full classroom leadership. Program goals emphasize cultural competence, social justice, and disciplinary rigor, preparing graduates for Rhode Island secondary teaching certification and endorsement in teaching multilingual learners. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and strong content-area coursework; teaching experience is not required but experience with youth is expected. The program had a 100% pass rate in 2025.
