The Sc.M. in Data-Enabled Computational Engineering and Science (DECES) at Brown University’s School of Engineering is a highly interdisciplinary graduate program designed to prepare students for careers at the intersection of advanced modeling, simulation, and data science, with a focus on applications in engineering and the physical sciences. Students complete 8 courses covering engineering focus areas (e.g., mechanics of solids, materials science), applied mathematics, and data science/high-performance computing, with flexible electives for depth. Three tracks are offered: thesis, non-thesis, and professional (internship option). The program leverages Brown’s expertise in applied mathematics and engineering, aiming to develop both technical skills (nonlinear finite element analysis, machine learning, integration of physics-based modeling and data science) and a deep understanding of how simulation and computation drive modern engineering design and research.
