The Master of Music (Conducting) at the University of Melbourne is designed as a professional research degree for specialist development in conducting. Candidates will study key aspects of conducting—such as repertoire selection, score analysis, rehearsal preparation, and conducting technique—while engaging in practical podium experience. The program includes preparation and conducting of ensembles in major performances; performances generally occur at the 12- and 18-month marks. Students receive regular individual tuition, participate in seminars and performance classes, and can undertake ensemble electives. Graduates gain advanced skills in leading ensembles, musical interpretation, and rehearsal direction, preparing them for leadership roles in orchestras, bands, and choral settings.
