Cambridge’s BA History of Art surveys Western and selected non‑Western art and architecture from the Middle Ages to the twenty‑first century. Part I (year 1) provides a broad overview of 2,000+ years of art and architectural history, engaging closely with Cambridge’s museums and collections; students also complete a compulsory first‑year dissertation. Part II (years 2–3) offers specialist option papers (e.g., Medieval art, Renaissance Italy, Early Modern British art and architecture, 18th–20th‑century European art, Surrealism, contemporary art) alongside core courses: Approaches (year 2), which introduces the history and methods of art history, and a year‑3 course on the history and practice of Display (museums, collections, exhibition contexts), plus a compulsory final‑year dissertation. The course aims to build deep understanding of art and architecture, visual literacy, and strong critical and analytical skills, supported by Cambridge’s collections and architectural setting.
