The Harvard Divinity School Master of Theological Studies (MTS) is a two-year, full-time graduate degree allowing broad and deep engagement in religious traditions and fields, including a concentration in Buddhist Studies. The Buddhist focus leverages Harvard’s Buddhist Ministry Initiative (BMI), offering coursework in Buddhist history, thought, languages (e.g., Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese), and practical ministry. Students can cross-register at Harvard’s other graduate schools and within the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium, expanding academic exposure. The program prepares students for advanced doctoral study or further professional and vocational pursuits such as religious leadership, chaplaincy, non-profit work, social activism, and academic research. Students benefit from experiential field education placements in settings like hospitals, dharma centers, and social service agencies. Specialized scholarships and conferences foster global engagement, particularly with Asian Buddhist communities.
