The Master of Arts (AM) in English at Harvard University Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) is awarded as a non-terminal, en-route degree to PhD candidates. The program offers a rigorous curriculum encompassing critical and cultural theory, literary history, and advanced research skills. Students complete at least 14 graduate-level courses within two years, including two proseminars and in-depth study of major literary fields. A reading knowledge of two foreign languages is required. While Harvard’s main FAS English track is research-focused and not a standalone terminal MA, Harvard Extension School offers a terminal Master of Liberal Arts (ALM) in English, featuring customizable English and elective coursework (12 courses), with online and on-campus requirements, and optional thesis or capstone tracks. Both programs emphasize advanced literature analysis, research, and scholarly communication. Graduates pursue roles in academia, education, journalism, and related fields.
