The Bachelor of Arts in Art, Film, and Visual Studies (AFVS) at Harvard University is an undergraduate program that provides rigorous training in both the practice and critical study of the visual arts. Students choose from three areas of focus: studio arts, film/video making, and film and visual studies. The curriculum integrates practical skill development with intellectual exploration, including courses in filmmaking, animation, photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, film history, media theory, contemporary art, critical theory, and the built environment. Students may opt to write a senior thesis or undertake a senior project. The department, located in the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, regularly hosts exhibitions and film screenings, such as the 2025 Senior Thesis Exhibition and Spring Open Studio events.
