Nagoya University School of Law does not offer a Juris Doctor (JD) program in the US sense, but rather a Master of Laws (Comparative Law) program taught in both English and Japanese. This two-year graduate program is designed for overseas legal professionals, policymakers, civil servants, and legal educators, primarily from Asia. It emphasizes comparative legal studies between Japan and students’ home countries, combining coursework, independent research, and a master's thesis. Students receive individual supervision, participate in group research, and can take Japanese language courses. The curriculum focuses on legal and political science with opportunities for specialized tutorials, lectures, and field trips. Admission is independent of the LL.M. (Modern Law) program and leads to advanced research or doctoral study.
