The English major at Northeastern University's College of Social Sciences and Humanities develops students’ abilities in literature, writing, linguistics, and rhetoric, enabling them to analyze texts, engage creatively, and critically interpret culture and communication. The curriculum covers American and British literatures, creative writing, linguistics, rhetoric, and digital literacies. Students gain critical thinking, analytical, and research skills through experiential learning, co-ops, and community engagement. Graduates are prepared for careers in publishing, media, education, law, and other fields requiring advanced literacy and cultural insight. Co-op and electives allow customization of the academic path, and independent research is encouraged.
