The Master of Legal Studies (MLS) at the University of Auckland, offered by the Faculty of Law, is tailored for professionals from non-legal backgrounds who require legal knowledge to support their careers or research. It is not for those seeking to qualify as practicing lawyers but rather to gain comprehensive expertise in the law and legal system for application in fields such as business, compliance, government, engineering, and research. The program provides flexible full- and part-time modes and allows for study in specialist areas via coursework and/or a research thesis. Students select from more than 30 taught courses and may undertake a cross-disciplinary component with approved courses from other faculties. Specialisations are optional and awarded with sufficient credits in one area. Graduates gain essential skills in legal reasoning, analytical and critical thinking, legal research, and knowledge of the New Zealand legal system, enhancing career prospects across numerous sectors.
