The Bachelor of Optometry and Vision Science (BOptom) at the University of Auckland is New Zealand’s only optometry degree, accredited by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand. The program combines clinical optometry and vision science, with emphasis on diagnostics and treatment of eye diseases. Students complete a first year in Bachelor of Science (usually Biomedical Science) followed by four years of optometry-specific courses in optics, anatomy, pathology, ocular pharmacology, and clinical skills. Training includes extensive clinical placements and business skills relevant to private and public health environments. Graduates are eligible for registration as optometrists in New Zealand and Australia, able to work in private practice, hospitals, clinics, or research.
