The Professional Track MA at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Journalism & Mass Communication is a 30-credit, skills-focused graduate program designed for those seeking to enter or advance careers in news and information production. Students work with advisors to craft a personalized curriculum emphasizing practical communication skills, in-depth knowledge of journalism and mass communication, and a selected area of specialization (e.g., investigative reporting, literary journalism). The curriculum combines core skills courses (such as reporting, multimedia, and long-form storytelling), conceptual coursework, and electives; it culminates in a final professional portfolio. The program is particularly well suited to candidates with undergraduate degrees outside journalism and generalist reporters pursuing specialization. Most students complete the program in 15 months, including a preparatory summer and intensive training during orientation. There are no foreign language requirements.
