The Master of Laws - Legal Institutions (LL.M.-LI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School is a course-based program designed for students who have already obtained a law degree (such as an LL.B.) outside the United States and wish to gain advanced expertise in American law. The curriculum includes two required courses—Introduction to American Law and Legal Sources—and elective courses selected from the J.D. curriculum, allowing flexibility to tailor to specific legal interests. The program is intended to provide deep understanding of U.S. legal institutions and common law reasoning, and may provide eligibility for sitting a U.S. Bar Exam. Graduates are well-prepared for roles in law practice, consultancy, academia, government, or policy-making, especially with a focus on comparative and international perspectives.
