The Bachelor of Science in Climate System Science at the Jackson School of Geosciences, UT Austin, launched in Fall 2024, prepares students to quantitatively analyze and understand Earth's climate system. This pioneering program—the first of its kind in Texas—gives students a rigorous foundation in climate science through courses in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and data analytics, with significant focus on computational skills and big data analysis (including machine learning). The curriculum emphasizes components of the climate system (atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, biosphere, lithosphere) and advanced research and programming skills. Students gain expertise to address real-world climate challenges and contribute to climate solution strategies across sectors. Fieldwork, community engagement, and research opportunities support professional development. The program is distinctly scientific—not an environmental science or sustainability degree—and prepares graduates for careers or advanced study in climate science, policy, and related fields.
