The Yale School of Art’s MFA in Painting/Printmaking program emphasizes rigorous individual and group studio practice, critical dialogue, and experimental approaches to visual art. Instruction focuses on painting as a distinct field with deep historical and theoretical foundations, encouraging innovation and diversity of practice. Students benefit from integrated printmaking studies and may focus on painting, printmaking, or a hybrid, with ample resources including a dedicated printmaking workshop, digital technology, and individual studios. Approximately 18–21 students are admitted annually. The curriculum incorporates critiques with faculty and visiting artists/critics, seminars, and a credit structure requiring significant dedication within and outside the School of Art. The program culminates in a thesis exhibition presenting each student’s developed body of work.
