The David Geffen School of Drama at Yale's MFA in Design prepares students to become accomplished and innovative designers in costume, lighting, projection, set, and sound for the theater. The program emphasizes personal artistic development, collaborative practice, and professional readiness through a balanced curriculum of classroom instruction and hands-on production experience. In the first year, all students take courses across all design concentrations, and in subsequent years, focus more deeply on their chosen area(s). Students are selected based on portfolio strength, artistic promise, and commitment to theater, supported by a close mentorship model and substantial production opportunities. The program seeks to nurture experimentation and inclusivity, aligning with Yale's core values of artistry, mutual respect, and anti-racist practices. Approximately 17 students enter each year, benefiting from a high faculty-to-student ratio and comprehensive practical experience on Yale productions. The MFA is conferred upon demonstration of distinction in coursework and professional practice.
