The Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies at Yale University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences examines, from multiple disciplinary perspectives, the experiences and contributions of people of African descent in Black Atlantic societies (including the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America). Students learn historical, cultural, political, economic, and social development issues centered on race and inequality. The program fosters critical, analytical, and interpretive skills. Majors choose an area of focus in a traditional discipline or an interdisciplinary thematic concentration of five courses. The major requires twelve term courses: seven core courses (including history sequence, humanities, social sciences, junior seminar, senior colloquium, senior essay) and five electives in the focus area. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for careers in education, law, business, city planning, public policy, journalism, and more, as well as graduate and professional programs.
