The Bachelor of Arts in Classics and Classical Civilization at Yale University’s Division of Humanities offers students an interdisciplinary study of ancient Greek and Roman societies. Students explore literature, history, philosophy, religion, art, and archaeology from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages—focusing on their artistic, historical, and contemporary significance. The curriculum includes courses on ancient texts (primarily in translation), surveys of ancient Athens and Rome, ancient epic, drama, philosophy, Roman civilization, and the classical tradition. The major requires at least 12 term courses, including the senior seminar, with mandatory courses in ancient history/classical art and archaeology, and advanced work in either Greek or Latin. The program is highly flexible, allowing customization to student interests and cross-disciplinary integration.
