The Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) program at Yale University provides a thorough education in the humanities and prepares students for graduate study or careers in theater, dance, and the performing arts. The BA program is committed to cultivating artists and scholars who integrate craft with theory, interdisciplinarity, and collaborative creation. The curriculum spans theater, dance, performance studies, musical theater, intermedia arts, and design, with strong encouragement to explore related fields in the humanities. Students complete two prerequisite courses and ten further term courses covering artistic practice, interarts, histories, and performance theory. The major is noted for flexible interdisciplinary coursework, production seminars, and faculty resources drawn from a wide range of departments including active engagement with the David Geffen School of Drama. No audition is required: students apply to Yale College and choose the TDPS major after admission. Over a third of majors double-major in another field, and all undergraduates are encouraged to apply for courses in TDPS. The program actively supports independent and thesis research, especially in dance studies, and fosters both practical and critical skills necessary for a career or further study in performance arts.
