The Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies at Yale University is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major housed within the Yale School of Architecture, available exclusively to students enrolled in Yale College. The program is grounded in the analysis of the physical and social spaces of the city and the larger built environment. It draws on expertise from architecture, urban design and development, urban and architectural history, theory, globalization, infrastructure, transportation, and community-based planning. The curriculum emphasizes the history, theory, and analysis of urban form; political economy of society and space; conceptual and analytical methods in urban studies; and the theory and practice of urban planning and design. The major prepares students for careers and graduate study in areas such as urban planning, architecture, law, nonprofit management, public policy, real estate, geography, sociology, and more. Students must complete 13 course credits including surveys, methods courses (such as the Urban Lab), electives, and a senior requirement (project or seminar). The program emphasizes interdisciplinary flexibility: students create a coherent course plan in consultation with a director of undergraduate studies, drawing from courses across the university connected to urban themes.
