UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism offers a concurrent Master of Journalism (MJ) and Master of Arts in Latin American Studies (MA) degree, allowing students to integrate advanced training in journalism with in-depth, interdisciplinary study of Latin America. The three-year program enables students to simultaneously complete the full requirements for both degrees, preparing them for careers in international reporting, academic research, or professional work focused on Latin America. Students gain hands-on reporting experience in Latin America, mentorship from seasoned journalists, and interdisciplinary coursework across cultural, political, and economic fields. The Latin American Studies component requires language proficiency (Spanish or Portuguese), core courses, electives across relevant disciplines, and a thesis or comprehensive oral final exam. The Journalism component is built around media platforms (such as audio, documentary, photography), editorial skills, and international reporting projects.
