The M.A. in Jurisprudence and Social Policy at Berkeley Law is a specialized graduate degree open only to current Berkeley Law J.D. or JSP Ph.D. students. The program offers a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum, examining law and legal institutions through the lens of social sciences and humanities—such as economics, political science, philosophy, sociology, history, and psychology. Students receive advanced training in empirical, theoretical, and policy-oriented research, preparing them for academic careers or expert policy analysis roles. The curriculum includes foundational seminars, advanced statistics, research design, and seminars covering diverse topics like law and social inequality, human rights, criminal justice, technology, and more. M.A. candidates must complete a minimum of 20–24 units of graduate coursework and either a thesis or an oral exam, in addition to having fulfilled the core JSP coursework requirements.
