The UC Berkeley–UCSF Joint Medical Program (JMP) is a five-year program where students complete their pre-clerkship years at UC Berkeley, earning a Master of Science (MS) in Health and Medical Sciences through a curriculum that integrates student-led, inquiry-based medical education with foundational and public health coursework. The program emphasizes antiracist practice, health equity, and collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to medicine and public health. Students develop a scholarly master’s project based on their interests, supported by structured mentorship. Following the MS portion, students finish their clinical MD requirements at UCSF. Key learning modalities include Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Team-Based Learning (TBL), and community leadership seminars. Graduates are prepared to be physicians and change agents in medicine and public health, skilled in research, multidisciplinary teamwork, teaching, and advocacy for structural change.
