The Bachelor of Arts in Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies at UC Berkeley is offered by the Department of Ethnic Studies (College of Letters and Science). The program is grounded in the decolonization and liberation projects of U.S. Latina/os and their allies in civil rights, gender, and sexual liberation movements from the 1960s to the present. It emphasizes critical thinking produced by racially and sexually oppressed communities, and examines the intersectionality of race, sexuality, gender, and class in complex socio-historical processes. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, including coursework in social sciences, history, literature, visual and performing arts, public policy, education, health, theater, film, media, religion, and philosophy. Practicum experiences are available in creative writing, research methods, visual and performance arts, and field studies/internships with community organizations. The program prepares students for careers and further study in fields such as teaching, counseling, journalism, law, medicine, community organizing, and public service.
