The Bachelor of Arts in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (MELC) at UC Berkeley offers students the opportunity for in-depth study of the languages, literatures, art, archaeology, and history of the Middle East, spanning from antiquity to modern times. The curriculum features language and literature courses in Arabic, Modern Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish (minor only), as well as ancient languages including Egyptian, Sumerian, Akkadian, and Aramaic. Majors can specialize in either 'Languages and Literature' (focusing on modern languages) or 'Middle Eastern Worlds' (focusing on the history, culture, and religion of the region). Students take required core courses covering ancient and modern Middle East, participate in innovative and interdisciplinary discovery experiences, and may pursue further minors in related Middle Eastern languages.
