UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the UCLA African Studies Program offer a concurrent degree allowing students to earn an MPH (Community Health Sciences) and an MA in African Studies simultaneously. Students complete core public health training—assessment, planning, evaluation, health equity/disparities, health promotion, reproductive and population health, global health, life-course, program development and evaluation, and research methods—plus interdisciplinary African Studies coursework and language/proficiency requirements. The MPH requires an applied practice field placement (U.S. or abroad) and a comprehensive exam; the MA requires either a thesis or capstone. Up to 8 quarter units of African Studies coursework may be double-counted toward both degrees by petition. Applicants must meet admissions requirements for both programs and are advised to contact both units for guidance.
