UCLA TFT’s MFA in Production with an emphasis in Directing – Narrative is a rigorous three‑year, full‑time program that blends practical filmmaking skills with theoretical and historical study. Year 1 builds foundational and collaborative skills across screenwriting, directing, documentary, cinematography, editing, postproduction, and production planning, along with critical/historical media contexts. Year 2 emphasizes close faculty mentorship and advanced techniques while students write, direct, edit, and realize projects across fictional narrative, documentary, digital media, or experimental film, plus coursework in cinema and media studies. Year 3 centers on the intensive thesis production (documentary or narrative), with options for electives in areas such as screenwriting, producing, animation, and digital media. The program admits once per year for Fall and is housed in the Department of Film, Television & Digital Media within UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television.
