UCLA TFT’s Animation MFA (UCLA Animation Workshop) emphasizes a “one person, one film” philosophy, giving each filmmaker complete creative control and encouraging diverse styles—conceptual, narrative, experimental, traditional hand-drawn, 2D/3D computer, stop-motion, VR, and more. The curriculum is full-time and sequenced across three years: year 1 focuses on traditional hand-done animation principles; year 2 centers on computer animation (2D/3D or hybrid); year 3 culminates in a thesis project (film, interactive project, or—by petition—feature animation script/series proposal/pitch bible) demonstrating mastery of animation principles. Students typically complete 72 units over a minimum of six quarters with at least 12 units per quarter and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
