UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television’s Cinema & Media Studies MA offers two tracks. The Academic/Integrated MA–PhD track provides rigorous coursework in film and media history, theory, and analysis as a foundation for doctoral study at UCLA or elsewhere. The Professional track prepares students for careers across the media industries (e.g., festivals/programming, archives, criticism, media industries research), encouraging internships and proseminars that leverage UCLA’s location within Southern California’s film and media ecosystem. The Professional track requires 36 units (at least 9 courses), including core courses such as FTV 215B Text & Context in an Intermedia Age, FTV 211A Historiography: Media, History and the Archive, and FTV 213 Capstone Seminar. All MA programs are full-time, and the department admits only for Fall entry.
