UCLA History awards the M.A. in History as part of its doctoral track. The department admits only to the Ph.D.; students complete M.A. requirements during the first phase, which includes graduate coursework, language training aligned with field needs, and teaching apprenticeships. The comprehensive examination covers one approved field from a broad list spanning global and thematic histories. Coursework for the master’s must be taken for letter grades when available, and may also satisfy Ph.D. requirements. The program emphasizes historiography (e.g., History 204), graduate seminars in and outside the department, and preparation toward doctoral qualifying exams; students develop a dissertation prospectus prior to the oral qualifying examinations.
