UCLA Geography’s M.A. is structured as a two‑year graduate program that serves as the foundation for the Ph.D.; the department admits to the M.A. only students whose ultimate goal is the Ph.D. Students form a guidance committee by the end of the first year, then a three‑member thesis or capstone committee (at least two Geography faculty) to supervise coursework and the M.A. thesis or capstone. Students must complete core seminar GEOG 200A and required seminar GEOG 200B in the first year, fulfill a methods requirement (via coursework or other approved means), and complete all coursework within two years with grades of B or better.
