UCLA’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology offers a two‑year master’s program with curricular flexibility across ecology, evolution, and behavior. Students begin with a common core and provisional faculty advisor in year one, then complete elective seminars and either a thesis or a comprehensive exam in year two to earn the M.S. in Biology. The program leverages campus-wide resources such as the Institute of the Environment, Center for Tropical Research, UC Natural Reserve System, and Center for Society and Genetics. Students must complete at least 36 units, including an advanced quantitative course in statistics/biostatistics/bioinformatics (optional only for the Evolutionary Medicine specialization). Cohorts are small and admission is highly competitive; recent M.S. cohorts enroll roughly 4–7 students.
