UCLA Linguistics offers a research‑oriented M.A. as the first stage of its graduate program, requiring nine courses (36 units) with a B average or better. All students take Linguistics 200A, 200B, 200C and two of 201A, 201B, 201C; one additional graduate course chosen from 204C, 209A, 213A, 213B, 213C, 217, or 236; and three electives from approved graduate offerings. The program is completed via a capstone plan (either oral examination or a substantial paper option). Undergraduate preparation in Linguistics 103, 110, 120A, and 120B (or equivalent) is expected as prerequisites for corresponding graduate work . UCLA indicates the program leads to the M.A. and Ph.D.; current admissions are to the Ph.D. with the M.A. earned en route, i.e., the department admits only Ph.D. applicants who must fulfill all M.A. requirements . Departmental Scholars Program is a special BA/MA pathway internal to UCLA undergraduates and has specific prerequisites; it is not offered in 2025–2026 .
