The BA in Global Jazz Studies at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music encourages students to think globally about jazz’s capacity to transform musical and political worlds while building on UCLA’s strong foundations in jazz studies and world music. The major combines studio instruction, participation in jazz and world music ensembles, and coursework in theory, improvisation, expression, composition, and arranging, along with scholarly study of jazz history and culture. It is interdisciplinary, drawing on departments across the School of Music and UCLA’s African American Studies. The program is a designated capstone major with a tailored senior capstone project.
