UCLA’s International Development Studies (IDS) B.A. is a selective, interdisciplinary major that trains students to study, analyze, and critically assess the social, political, and economic forces shaping inequality and development across the Global South and North. Core themes include development theory and aid institutions, globalization, urbanization, migration and refugee relief, health and food security, human rights and environmental justice, gender disparities, democratization, and policy interventions. The curriculum includes an introductory course (IDS 1), four core upper-division courses (e.g., IDS 110, M120, 130, 140 offered annually), Social & Critical Theory options, and a capstone seminar (IDS 191). Many courses are also offered in Summer, and study abroad (UCEAP/Travel Study) can count toward the major with petition/approval.
