UCLA’s B.S. in Physics provides a solid preparation in universally acknowledged core physics concepts through rigorous classroom study and extensive laboratory experience. The program is housed in the Department of Physics & Astronomy within the Division of Physical Sciences and emphasizes analytical thinking, problem solving, strong mathematics foundation, and familiarity with technical scientific equipment and computing. Specialties and research strengths available to undergraduates span condensed matter, particle physics, plasma, nuclear, AMO, accelerator physics, biophysics, and astrophysics, with pathways to diverse careers or graduate study. Major requirements must be taken for letter grades; pre-major and major courses cannot be taken Pass/No Pass, and a minimum 2.0 GPA across required courses is needed to complete the degree. Students plan their upper-division program with a departmental advisor five terms prior to graduation. The General Catalog page outlines additional degree rules, including eligibility for the departmental honors program for seniors meeting GPA thresholds.
