The AOS/Mathematics B.S. is a designated capstone major jointly drawing from UCLA’s Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) and Mathematics departments. It provides rigorous mathematical training together with comprehensive background in topics relevant to atmospheric, oceanic, and environmental sciences, and is intended to offer streamlined, strong preparation for graduate studies. The curriculum includes six upper-division Mathematics courses and six upper-division AOS courses plus lower-division prerequisites and a capstone course requiring an independent research project or thesis that applies mathematical methods to an AOS topic, conceived and executed with faculty mentorship. The AOS department offers a broad curriculum spanning dynamic and synoptic meteorology, atmospheric physics and chemistry, and upper atmosphere and space physics, which underpins upper-division selection in this joint major.
