UCLA’s new Southeast Asian Studies BA is housed in the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures. Students choose a primary Southeast Asian language concentration in Filipino, Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese and build broad cultural competence across multiple countries in the region through interdisciplinary coursework. The curriculum prepares graduates with strong language proficiency and regional knowledge applicable to careers in business, journalism, diplomacy, NGOs, cultural institutions, education, and academia. UCLA offers a wide range of Southeast Asia courses across departments and a dedicated SEASIAN course prefix; languages are taught in ALC, with additional distance-learning offerings (e.g., Khmer, Burmese) via the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and study-abroad options through UCEAP in Thailand and Singapore.
