UCLA’s Asian Languages and Linguistics (AL&L) BA exposes students to multiple Asian languages and cultures and emphasizes two linguistics areas—discourse-functional and sociolinguistics—along with language pedagogy. The major develops skills in linguistic and cultural analysis, working knowledge of one or two Asian languages, fieldwork with Asian languages in social and cultural contexts, familiarity with language pedagogy theories and classroom teaching skills, and the ability to research and communicate effectively about Asian languages and cultures. Graduates are prepared for advanced study, international relations and business, and language teaching locally and globally.
