UCLA’s Asian Languages and Linguistics (AL&L) BA encourages exposure to multiple Asian languages and cultures and centers on discourse-functional and sociolinguistics alongside language pedagogy. The major develops skills in linguistic and cultural analysis, working knowledge of one or two Asian languages, competency in fieldwork in natural social and cultural contexts, familiarity with language-teaching theories and classroom practice, and understanding of how language, society, culture, and interaction relate across Asia. It prepares graduates for advanced study, international relations and business, and language teaching locally and globally.
