UCLA’s African & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) BA is an interdisciplinary major within the International & Area Studies program that allows students to study the Middle East, North Africa, the Arab states, and Sub‑Saharan Africa through modern, cross‑disciplinary perspectives in history, politics, literature, religion, languages, and society. The curriculum requires language study to at least the intermediate level in a relevant modern language (e.g., Arabic, Hebrew, Armenian, Iranian languages, Swahili, Turkish, etc.), alongside preparatory courses and 12 upper-division classes, and offers options for study abroad, research, and internships. The program develops critical analytical skills and regional expertise applicable to careers in policy, development, journalism, and academia.
