UCLA’s African American Studies B.A. offers an interdisciplinary education on the origins, experiences, and conditions of peoples of African descent, with core courses addressing challenges faced by African Americans in the U.S. and globally, plus six courses in a chosen disciplinary concentration to build a demonstrable skill set. Students declare the major after completing AfAmer 1, remaining in good standing, and registering with the department; a minimum 2.0 GPA in African American Studies courses is required for program credit. The department highlights ongoing courses and opportunities across summer and the academic year within the UCLA College’s Division of Social Sciences.
