The English Education, BA at Purdue University's College of Education is a comprehensive, state- and nationally-aligned teacher preparation program designed for students who wish to teach English language arts at the secondary (grades 5–12) level. The curriculum covers extensive coursework in literature, writing, and language (broader than non-teaching English degrees), as well as five content-specific methods courses on teaching aspects of English. Each semester includes field experiences in local secondary schools, culminating with a full semester of student teaching. The program prepares future teachers to foster critically literate participants in a diverse society and meets both state and national licensure standards. Accreditation is maintained by CAEP and the Indiana State Board of Education. Successful graduates qualify for Indiana teaching licensure in Language Arts (5–12) and optionally Blended and Online Teaching (5–12), with concentrations such as English Language Learners available.
