The Master of Arts (M.A.) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida is an advanced, flexible graduate program. It focuses on deepening students’ expertise in the chosen discipline within the humanities or social sciences, enhancing skills in research, critical analysis, and academic writing. Students may choose between thesis and non-thesis tracks. The curriculum involves core courses in the field, elective seminars, and opportunities for interdisciplinary study. Both options require at least 30 graduate credits (courses numbered 5000 and above), with no more than 6 credits on an S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) basis. Thesis students complete and defend a publishable-quality research thesis, while non-thesis students usually complete a comprehensive final paper or project, sometimes with an oral presentation or defense.
