The University of Florida's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers two focused undergraduate programs: the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Astronomy and the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Astrophysics. The BA in Astronomy provides a comprehensive understanding of modern physics, mathematics (including calculus), and the scientific fundamentals regarding planetary systems, stars, galaxies, and cosmology. The BS in Astrophysics offers a more intensive scientific curriculum aimed at mastering concepts of mechanics, electromagnetism, modern physics, and experimental/observational astrophysics. Students participate in research alongside faculty, often working with data from world-class facilities such as the GTC telescope and the HiPerGator supercomputer. Both degrees emphasize scientific methodology, use of astronomical observation, critical evaluation of findings, and clear communication of scientific ideas. Undergraduate research is strongly encouraged and many students also participate in the NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in computational astrophysics.
