The MRes Systems and Synthetic Biology at Imperial College London is a full-time, 1-year research-focused postgraduate program offered by the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The course provides graduate students from life sciences, engineering, and physical sciences backgrounds with an interdisciplinary platform to work collaboratively on major challenges in synthetic and systems biology. The program combines hands-on experience in experimental biology and mathematical modeling with lecture-based learning. Core taught elements include systems biology, synthetic biology, advanced technologies, and responsible research and innovation (RRI). A central component is an eight-month research project—often in partnership with industry, medicine, or other organizations—allowing in-depth specialization and networking opportunities. No written exams are required; assessment is through coursework and project work. The program also strongly engages with the ethical, legal, and societal issues surrounding developments in biology and biotechnology.
