This BA programme at Durham University’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities allows students to develop advanced language skills in Arabic while gaining deep understanding of the cultures where the language is spoken. Students may start Arabic from scratch (ab initio) or as an additional language, and combine it with other languages offered by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. The degree integrates language acquisition with cultural studies across literature, film, history, the arts, and politics. The third year is typically spent abroad immersing students in their target culture. Graduates gain intercultural competence valued in global careers. Durham ranks highly in Arabic and Modern Languages nationally, with research-led teaching and a wide range of language learning facilities.
