The Master of Arts in Japanese Studies at the Faculty of Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong is a postgraduate program designed for students with diverse backgrounds—both those with and without a prior major in Japanese studies or Japanese language. The program provides a rigorous, interdisciplinary education in Japanese studies, integrating language, culture, history, and society. It offers advanced study for those wishing to deepen their expertise, as well as language-related courses for students with high Japanese proficiency (N1 level on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test). Students learn to critically analyze social science theories, cultural and social issues in modern Japan, and apply multi-disciplinary approaches to understand Japan. Graduates acquire skills to analyze both Japanese and wider Asian societies, and to engage constructively in cross-cultural contexts.
