The programme explores contemporary social problems, policy interventions, and policymaking processes across sectors and countries, combined with rigorous training in traditional and innovative social research methodologies. A core theme is the relationship between research and policy, with options to specialise in qualitative or quantitative methods and to pursue either an individual dissertation or a collaborative project with an external organisation. The degree provides ESRC-recognised research training suitable for progression to doctoral study and can be taken on campus or fully online, full-time, part-time, or modular/flexible.
